Artificial Intelligence (AI) can be broadly categorized into four categories:
- Reactive Machines: Reactive machines are the simplest type of AI systems. They are designed to react to specific stimuli from the environment, without any memory or ability to learn from past experiences. They analyze the current situation and respond based on pre-programmed rules. Examples include Deep Blue, IBM’s chess-playing computer, and autonomous vehicles.
- Limited Memory: Limited memory AI systems have the ability to retain some past data and use it to make decisions. These systems can improve their performance over time by using previous experiences to inform their decisions. An example of this is a self-driving car that learns to adapt its driving behavior based on past driving experiences.
- Theory of Mind: This type of AI aims to understand and interpret the emotions, beliefs, and intentions of other entities. It is designed to simulate human-like thought processes, including social skills and empathy. Theory of mind AI has the ability to interact and communicate effectively with humans. Currently, no AI systems have reached this level of sophistication.
- Self-aware: Self-aware AI is the highest level of AI, where an AI system can understand its own existence and consciousness. It can learn and adapt to new situations based on its own goals and objectives. Self-aware AI has not yet been achieved, and it remains a topic of research and speculation.
